Cumbria and Lancashire CND News
We held an Area Business Meeting on Tuesday, August 4th, 2015 in Lancaster. Illness had, for the first time, prevented us from being represented, at the July National Council meeting in London, so we will have to wait for the official minutes for a full account of the event, but our absence on this one occasion strengthened our conviction of the value of our Area being represented at CNDUK’s periodic Council meetings. They give us an opportunity to not only keep abreast of national CNDUK activities and policies, but also to present our own regional position on the issues discussed. We therefore decided to increase our efforts to keep all members informed about Area business and campaigning activity.
Currently we are actively participating in the new North West Anti Nuclear Alliance, continuing to press for local mayors to join the Mayors for Peace programme, commemorating the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and resisting the pressure in Cumbria for both nuclear new-builds and the expansion of nuclear wast disposal sites.
On a purely positive note, we are rejoicing that at last Lancaster and Fleetwood has elected an anti-Trident MP in Cat Smith. We are following her parliamentary career very closely and with great interest.
